About Muscat
Muscat is the capital and largest city of Oman and lies on the Arabian Sea along the Gulf of Oman. Muscat is the political, economic, and administrative center of the Sultanate. As of 2008, the population of the Muscat metropolitan area was 1,090,797. The metropolitan area spans approximately 1500 km² and includes six wilayats. Muscat's economy is dominated by trade, petroleum and porting.
Tourist Spots:
Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani fort were built in 1580 by the Portuguese in the rocky mountains of Muscat. They have been now converted into museums.
Mutrah Souk is a maze-like marketplace recognized for its jewelry shops, traditional Omani handicrafts and Omani food. It also includes a fish market.
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the third largest mosque in the world and is home to a Swarovski crystal chandelier, the largest hand made Persian carpet in the world and marble paneling.
