About Oman

Located in Persian Gulf, the Sultanate of Oman borders the United Arab Emirates on the northwest, Saudi Arabia on the west and Yemen on the southwest. Its coast extends for 2,092 km and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman.

Under the visionary leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Sultanate has witnessed tremendous development, from infrastructurel to provision of services such as health and social to the development and capacity building through better quality of education, vocational training and job opportunities.

The Ministry of National Economy estimates that in mid 2006 the total population was 2.577 million. Of those, 1.844 million were Omanis. The population has grown from 2.018 million in the 1993 census to 2.340 million in the 2003 census.

The Sultanate is divided into nine governorates and regions. Each governorate exhibits its unique cultural traditions, Arabic dialect, clothing and occupation. The Sultanate is renowned for its desert plain that covers most of central Oman, a mountains range along the north and southeast coast, where the country’s main cities are also located: the capital city Muscat, Muttrah and Sur in the north and Salalah in the south.
