Fifa needs time to take Gulf Cup in its fold: Blatter

Date:01/14/2009

The Gulf Cup is certainly not in its infancy but is getting out of its teens. And to be recognised as a fully grown it has to wait for some more time. This is what Fifa President Sepp Blatter has to say during his press conference at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel yesterday. To put it plainly, Blatter said Fifa needs time to consider taking Gulf Cup in its fold. While calling for a permanent organising panel and fixed tournament dates, he pointed out there has never been set pattern for the Gulf Cup so far and that’s the reason why the event has not been accepted as part of the international calendar. Blatter however clarified that Fifa has not ignored the event altogether and it will continue to be part of Fifa’s developmental programmes. “I’m pleased to be here in Oman second time and I wish the four semifinalists my best wishes,” said Blatter. Blatter had a series of meetings with the officials of various football associations and besides focusing on the current mega event here, the game’s development in the region was also discussed. He said: “It’s important to have a permanent organising committee and a permanent fixture, regardless it is held every two years, three years or even four years. Only these will help Gulf Cup getting a place in the Fifa calendar.” Blatter also talked about recession and its, if not immediate but gradual, impact on the game and the top clubs, differing from what UEFA President Michel Platini had said about it a week ago. While Platini had said the game will never go moribund due to economic crises as people still have the love for the game, Blatter said money is very important for the game to survive and Fifa is definitely feeling the impact. “For the development of the game we need economy support, and that’s why I am saying that it has started showing the impact,” said Blatter. Blatter said Kuwait’s progress in the Gulf Cup is commendable and one must thank Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Mohammed bin Hammam, who was also present along with Oman Football Association Chairman Sayyid Khalid al Busaidy at the press conference yesterday, for paving them way to play in Muscat. “It’s he (Bin Hammam) who pointed out why the players should suffer because of political interference”, said Blatter. “We accepted his view and immediately revoked the suspension”, he added. On a query whether Iraq would get a chance to host an international match, Blatter, who calls himself a development offer and to see the growth of the game, said: “Fifa is always ready to host tournaments in Iraq, but security situation has to improve there.” -- Source: Oman Observer
